- Can I download clips to a computer & copy clips to CD or DVD to transfer to another computer?
Some computers do not burn clips to a CD or DVD at full quality, the best way to transfer clips is through a pen drive or hard drive to another computer through firewire.
- Can I get clips on CD-Rom or Mini-DV shipped outside the US or Canada?
Yes. We can only ship to locations FedEx or the United States Postal Service serves. Choose your shipping option at check out time and appropriate shipping fees will be applied to your shopping cart.
- Can I get clips on tape in PAL format?
We only offer clips in NTSC format. We do not offer clips in PAL format. You maybe able to use editing software to convert a NTSC file into a PAL. Use a sample test download to test this capability with your editing software.
- Do I have to render the clips after I download them?
If you have a editing system that handles DV or HD QuickTime codec, like Final Cut Pro , then no rendering is required. You can insert the clips directly onto your timeline after downloading them and play them back like any other clip. If you are using a non-linear system which is not DV compatible, then you will need to render the clips to the format you are using before inserting them into your program. Experiment by downloading the sample test images provided on this site to check for system compatibility prior to purchase.
- Do I need to register in order to peruse your site?
No, you don't have to register to view and purchase clips, but if you do, you'll have access to 2-test clips available for every shot in the stock footage collection and a Clip Bin to orgainize your shots. It's your choice.
- Do you have similar clips to the ones I see here?

- How do I download test clips to evaluate them?
We want you to be able to judge and test the clips that are available to license so we offer 2-sample test clips for each shot to download and test. We offer a no refund policy and offer our footage "as is". Therefore we highly encourage downloading NTSC sample test clips to look at the quality and range of shots and test ability to download and load QuickTime file(s) into your computer prior to purchase.
We offer the following sample test clips:
1) a full-length low-resolution NTSC QuickTime preview clip and
2) a 15-frame for DVcuts and 8-frame for HDcuts sample clip of the full-resolution NTSC QuickTime to be licensed (This file is slightly softer due the addition of a watermark and recompression).
Locate sample test clips when you click on "Info" or "QT" under each clip and the next window pop up will show the sample test clips download buttons. You will be direceted to register if you are not already and login to download sample test clips.
- How do I find a clip?
Simply enter a keyword or keywords into our search engine, or choose a category from DV Downloads, Bargain Cuts or HD Cuts category menu. Thumbnails of representative clips will be displayed. Click on the clips QT or INFO to open the information window.
- How do I import or download purchased imagery?
The clips available on this site are QuickTime movies made with the Apple DV codec. If the codec used by your NLE application is compatible with the Apple DV codec, the clips can be used directly, after copying to a media drive and importing. If your editing application codec is not compatible, the clip needs to be converted to a format that is compatible or you may need to order clips on DVD or Mini-DV. If you have any concerns importing QuickTime movies or if you are editing with a non-DV based system please download our 2-sample test clips available for every clip in the stock footage library.
- How do I know DV/HDcuts received my order?
You will be able to immediately download your image files or if you choose to have your imagery delivered to you on CD-Rom or Mini-DV you will receive an e-mail confirmation shortly after your order is received. If you do not receive an e-mail from DvCusts contact us at support@dvcuts.com.

- How do I store and organize clips I might want to purchase later?
Under the clip you want to store for later review, click on "+Clip Bin" to add the shot to your Clip Bin. You will need to register in order to use a clip bin feature. Just as in a non-linear editing program, you can store your clips in this bin, and then later review them, eliminating any you don't want, before proceeding to checkout.
- How do I submit my footage to the site?
We are always interested in repping talented filmmakers. Please contact us at content@dvcuts.com. Please provide information about your collection and we will contact you shortly about repping possibilities.

- How much hard drive space will I need?
The files vary in size, so in order to find out how much megabytes a file is look at the shot information window by clicking on its' QT or INFO. You will need at least the amount of space of the file size. If you are downloading with the same computer that you are using for production, you should have already planned for having plenty of hard drive space. If you are using a different computer for downloading, then you will need to make sure you have the space. All our file sizes are listed so you will know exactly what you need.
The computer you download should be the following:
The computer you use for production or have a large capacity backup drive (zip drive, cdrom burner etc.) or be networked to your production computer.
- How safe is my credit card?
The DVcuts site is a secure online arena for providing information and purchasing products. Our rigid security measures prevent the loss, misuse and alteration of the information. Credit card information you submit to DVcuts, as well as all other personal information (e.g., phone numbers and addresses), is encrypted by our secure server software (SSL).
- I'm worried about download times. What other options do I have?
Simply e-mail us that you are having download problems and need for us to send the imagery you purchased on your chose of either a CD-Rom or Mini-DV. A $50 assembly charge and appropriate shipping charges will be applied to your credit card prior to shipment.
- Once I pay for a clip, how long do I have to download it?
You have a window of 1-week to download clips that you purchased to license. If your computer crashes or you experience difficulty, you can log back on to your account and try the download again.
- What editing or compositing\fx software can I use them in?
DVcuts can be used in any editing or compositing program that accepts QuickTime. They are compatible with both Mac and PC running Win95/98, NT4 and Windows2000.
You must also have the QuickTime Photo-Jpeg codec installed so make sure it shows up in the compression codec list of your software. If you have QuickTime, you probably have the Photo-Jpeg codec.
HDcuts are offered in the DVCPro HD QuickTime codec which is supported by Apple and editing programs like Final Cut Pro HD and Apple has not released a DVCPro HD codec for QuickTime in Windows.
Use the Sample Test Download file to download if you are not sure. Please contact the manufacturer of your software before purchasing DV/HDcuts products if you are not sure whether your program accepts QuickTime.
- What format are your files in?
Our stock footage is shot with 35mm film, 16mm film, HD and digital video cameras. Stock footage has been created with the Apple DV codec and the files are Quicktime .mov files.
Specifications of DVcuts are full resolution NTSC D1 (480X720 resolution) QuickTime files and HDcuts specs are NTSC DVCPRO HD 1080i 16:9 aspect ratio (1920X1080 resolution) QuickTime files.
For more information about QuickTime please see Apple's QuickTime support site at www.apple.com.
- What format is DVcuts footage?
We provide Apple QuickTime files of our footage available as downloads or delivered on a CD-Rom or Mini-DV tape. You will have the option to choose how you would like your order fulfilled during checkout.
- What if I need to resize a DV cuts clip to 720x486 or 640x480?
All clips on the DV cuts site have been prepared with the Apple DV codec and are Quicktime.mov files. The size is 720x480 pixels. The frame rate is 29.97 (NTSC) with lower (even) field dominant interlacing. These clips will import directly into Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere editing systems as long as your settings are for 720x480 QuicktimeDV.
However, most Avid and Media 100 systems are not DV based, and use 720x486 or 640x480 pixels. Even after rendering a DV Cuts clip with Media 100 and Avid systems, the results may be imperfect.
This problem is easily solved by converting the pixel size of the clip in Adobe After Effects or by ordering your clip on CD-Rom or Mini-DV.
- What if I'm registered, but forgot my password?
If you've forgotten your password, visit the My Account Login page. Enter your e-mail address in the field under "Forget Your Password?" and click the "Remind Me" button. Your password will be sent to the e-mail address shortly.
- Why are some clips more expensive than others?
The price of a clip depends largely on the cost of production of that clip as well as rarity of content such an all night star shot. We price all of our clips at the lowest possible price in order to offer affordable imagery. However, some clips involving higher production costs are priced higher in order to cover our costs.
